Towns
on the Amalfi Coast
Considering
that I've never been to these towns, it's difficult
for me to write descriptions, so I have taken these
from other web sites. The "stay ins" are
my own though, so take them with a grain of salt.
Amalfi
"Amalfi
is a picturesque seaside resort that has the most
vibrant, typical Italian atmosphere, an ideal
climate, breath taking views and unique natural
beauties. There are many modern hotels located
in Amalfi, as well as some of the eldest hotels in
the whole of Italy." - Description
from Amalfi
Coast Web Guide
Stay
in Amalfi, if you:
- are looking
for a
coastal resort close to Ravello
- just
enough shops and restaurants
- don't
have a car (parking is next to impossible!)
Positano
"It
is the kingdom of many flights of little steps, of
narrow passageways enlivened and colored by
wonderful shops, lively bars and cafes, and
restaurants that specialize in seafood." - Description
from Amalfi
Coast Web Guide
Stay in Positano, if you:
- are looking
for a beautiful seaside resort
- want
to be close to lots of cafes and shops
- enjoy
people watching
- want
access
to a beach
- don't
mind walking up and down steep streets
Ravello
"Ravello
is a small city of ancient origin, which faces a
range of hills overlooking the clear blue sea of the
Gulf of Salerno, like a balcony. Under this balcony
the other wonders of this coast are unequalled. The
beauty of this area has inspired poets, painters and
musicians in the course of its millenarian history.
It was here that Wagner stayed and was inspired by
the magical beauties of the Villa Rufolo, its
gardens and the architectural works of the Cloister
to exclaim the ‘Garden of Klingsor’ is
found." - Description
from Hotel Onda Verde
Stay
in Ravello, if you:
- are
looking for a peaceful and secluded setting
- the
most beautiful view in the Amalfi coast
- looking
for a place that is less touristy and less noisy
- don't
care about nightlife
- want
something less touristy
- don't
mind traveling a bit longer to get to places
Sorrento
"Borrowing
from Greek mythology, the Romans placed the
legendary abode of the sirens at Sorrento. Perched
on high cliffs overlooking the bays of Naples and
Salerno, Sorrento has been sending out its siren
call for centuries--luring everybody from Homer to
Lord and Lady Astor to busloads of international
tourists, who invade every summer." -
Description from Frommer's
Stay in Sorrento, if you are looking for:
- a
large town (or small city?)
- lots
of shops and restaurants
- more
choices in terms of accommodations
- closer
proximity to Naples
